Flap text of the book

My question: does the cinematic image have a grammar? My hypothesis: that which is rejected leaves an indelible mark on what is selected. In exploring what makes the cinematic image ‘irreal’ (critical to both, the question and the hypothesis) an analysis of the film Yuva shows how the image is constructed on the basis of an infinite oscillation between presence and absence because each is marked by a trace of the other. In the cinematic image the trace reconstructs the notion of spectral time as the link between real time and filmic time crucial to creating the illusion of visual narrative coherence. Further, through an analysis of the film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. I explore another relationship – between consumers in an advanced capitalist society. This relationship is mediated by images. The image now becomes a heterotopic site par excellence in the interface between consumer and image. The image is the extended space that was once the domain of the commodity. As an extended space it has become a heterotopic site characterized by excessive functionality wherein the most important function is not for it to be put to use as much as it is to be possessed.

Short self-introduction

I am currently in the final year of my PhD. and my area of work is Semiotics, from within the discipline of Sociology. My topic is ‘A Sociological Investigation of the Film Studio: Images, Networks and the System of Production’.

Situated at the intersection of Semiotics and the Sociology of Science my work takes me into the editing studios of commercial Hindi cinema (Bollywood) to understand the construction of the object that is the cinematic image. My ethnography, situated on the inside, looks at the interaction between five key players – the Director, Editor, the raw footage, the script and the editing table. What I have is two human and three non-human actors, each with a voice of their own, in intense debate on what it is that is being constructed. My point of departure is the dismembered and fragmented form that enters the studio as raw material and from here on how the visual is actually made.

In my book ‘Grammar of the Cinematic Image: A Sociological Investigation of the Irreal’ in exploring what makes the cinematic image ‘irreal’, I look at how in the juxtaposition of different elements crucial to narrative sequencing there is a systematic break-down in the presumed mimetic relationship between cinema and reality. The notion of ‘presence’ has been looked at as critical to this break and the notion of absence is dealt with as vital to welding the camera image to the narrative.

The topic of the forthcoming issue is “Semiotics of Protest: the Forms of Dissent”.

The subject of protest will not be analyzed from the point of view of its historical and social causes and motivations, but from the point of view of its language: what meaning and communication phenomena do we designate by the term ‘protest’? What contextual conditions must arise so that a protest may take place? How are the languages, discourses, texts, and signs of protest articulated? Through what codes? Or else, contravening what codes? How is the meaning of a protest read and interpreted depending on its audience, and with what pragmatic effects? Moreover: do some ‘cultures of protest’ exist, changing according to the different historical periods and socio-cultural areas, and how do they interact with the evolution of communication media, and specifically with the rise and development of the digital ones? In particular, how can the communicative dynamics that characterize protests be described in their relations with social networks? More generally, within what theoretical framework can the relation between sense, consensus, and dissent be interpreted?

Attraverso quali codici? Oppure, contravvenendo a quali codici?

¿O bien, contraviniendo a cuáles códigos?

300 to 500 words in English, Spanish or French

Theme of the congress:
Contemporary dilemmas of visuality /
A dilemma (from the Greek, dis = two, lemma = topic or premise) is a problem whose solution allows for two possibilities, but none of them is completely satisfactory, so that a difficult choice comes out, upon which ethical and moral issues oſten impact. When a dilemma appears it is not possible to choose from a correct or an incorrect issue, but between two options that may be correct at the same time, but contrary to each other in a certain sense; between two equally appreciated values which, however, come into a conflict. In the field of visuality the dilemmas appear frequently, and seem to have multiplied themselves in the contemporary world, where images and their implications have acquired new strength in the infinite web of global connectivity.

It is perhaps in the field of photography –and particularly in press photography, traditionally linked to the greater effects of reality– where the most dilemmatic situations arise today: to make visible –or not– the oſten terrifying image of the present conflictive scenario, with its wars, attacks, famine, forced migrations, that put us “regarding the pain of others”, as Susan Sontag pointed out, and that may elicit undecidable political dilemmas that involve power factors in a worldwide level. In this extreme visibility, which expands the limits of the knowable, where the many forms of art also are displayed, images seem to recover the symbolic power that worried the ancient people, putting them at the risk of new idolatries. Visibility is assumed as a condition of democracy, as an imaginary of transparency, but also as an erasure of the uncertain threshold between public and private domains, another of the dilemmatic zones.

The dilemmatic visual situations are not limited, however, to moral or cultural questions; they appear equally in the more primary context of visual perception. In this sense, visual ambiguities, paradoxes and antinomies have also a place in the theme we are concerned with. The identification of the referents may suffer from the hesitations coming both from the perceptual organism and from the organization of the object. Even images that are generated and used in the context of scientific practices (diagnosis, experimentation, demonstration, explanation, etc.), which are oſten endorsed with a pretension of objectivity and unambiguity, do not escape from these situations.

Thus, visual contemporary dilemmas concern both ethics and aesthetics, politics, human and social sciences in general, as well as natural sciences, perhaps with special emphasis on biology. Since all knowledge relies on signs, the semiotic perspective allows precisely for an interdisciplinary and integrating view. Is in this vast territory that we want to pose the semiotic reflection on the dilemmas of visuality, calling to questioning, thinking and criticis

July 11, 2011

The Preparatory Committee of “The 11th World Congress of Semiotics”

Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing, China

(The official website: www.semio2012.com)

(Postal address: School of Foreign Languages & Cultures, Nanjing Normal University, No. 122, Ninghai Road, Nanjing 210097, Jiangsu Province, P. R. China)

Dear international semiotics colleagues,

The spirit of the 11th IASS Congress will be exhibited along two directions: the retrospective to the scholarly achievements attained over the past 40 years and the prospect for the desirable global-semiotic developments in future. On the whole, the coming-up congress will present a topography of current theoretical problematics facing global human sciences today.

In this second announcement of the Preparatory Committee of the 11th IASS Congress we present three lists of program sessions:

1. The list of the plenary speeches and speakers in the Congress;

2. The list of the round tables and sessions and the related organizers in the Congress;

3. The list of the round tables and organizers in the 1st Chinese Symposium on Semiotics (in Chinese, given here just for information for international colleagues).

In List No. 2 we present all items in terms of temporarily made thematic categories which intend to be used only by interested participants as the reference for registrations. The final list of items (round tables and sessions) and schedules can only be given after the registration process is finished till June 2012. There could be two kinds of participants: those who intend to present a paper in the Congress (so an abstract of 200 words or so is requested to be sent to the congress contact in advance); and those who only wish to join the activities during the Congress period. But both kinds of participants are requested to pay the same registration fee according to the rules.

With respect to the subjects of papers, all topics related to the basic fields mentioned in the first Call for Papers are acceptable; meanwhile, we especially encourage participants to join the sessions and round tables listed in the following table. Despite the rule that each paper reading is limited within 30 minutes, all papers presented will be included afterwards into the online Proceedings in a systematic format. In addition, some of the papers will be separately selected into the printed Proceedings for publication too.

Regarding the procedure of registration and other practical matters with respect to the participation please refer to the separate notices announced at the Congress Website. The related schedules and practical matters could be probably readjusted later according to the changing situations; please pay attention to the updating of news at the website.

WATS stands for the World Association for Theoretical Semiotics. We had a very successful organizational meeting at IASS-2009 in Coruña and now have about 20 members who are interested in developing, extending, criticizing, etc. semiotic theory and theoretical semiotics.

Our officers are:

President: Charls Pearson, USA

Vice-President: Gu Jia-zu, PRC

Secretary: Søren Brier, Denmark

Director: Abraham Solomonick, Israel

Director: Gören Sonesson, Sweden

They will serve until the election of new officers at WATS-2.

Our next meeting, WATS-2, will be a symposium on theoretical semiotics at IASS-2012 in Nanjing. This blog can serve as a CfPs. Abstracts of 1,000 words or less may be e-mailed to me in either .Doc or .Docx (preferred) format. My e-mail is dr.charls@avillager.org. I will be glad to accept your abstracts for the WATS-2 symposium or pass on to the membership any relevant messages interested scholars may have.

Membership is open to any serious scholar who expresses an interest in the improvement of existing semiotic theory or the development of new semiotic theory. The only requirement on theory is that it be rigorously grounded in the data. You can apply for membership by sending me your name, email address, nationality, and a very brief statement of your interest in semiotic theory.

Our application to the IASS for affiliation as an interest group is progressing very well.
